Luzern Fasnacht is less than two weeks away and here is the full schedule of events in English.
For those of you who have never been to the festival before, it is basically the Swiss equivalent of Mardi Gras and definitely not to be missed. The carnival kicks off at 5am on Thursday 7th February with a loud boom and the partying continues until 4am on Wed 13th Feb. During that time, there are huge parades through the centre of Luzern with amazing floats and costumes, then the bands and participants wander throughout the Old Town for the rest of the time. Everyone of all ages gets dressed up and parties – it really is a family affair!
Couple of tips – it is normally pretty cold, especially when standing watching the parades, so make sure you are wrapped up well (even under the costumes). Also, the bands can be quite loud and you will often see Swiss children with protective earphones on which are sold in most of the large department stores.
Finally, many of the main streets in the centre of Luzern are closed to all traffic (including buses) during the parades so be sure to check the SBB website for alternative routes into the town centre. Watch out for the ‘Durchfahrt gesperrt’ – road closed [to vehicles] – signs.
